Food Recalls: Understand Labels and Educate Yourself

Are you an educated consumer?

It would be nice if we could assume that food we buy in the grocery store is healthy and safe. But that is not always the case. It’s up to you to be an educated consumer and stay aware of any food recalls. Take the recent ground beef recall due to possible e-coli contamination. Since ground beef is a popular item in the summer for family gatherings and cookouts, this food recall was a popular news item. This isn’t always the case.

Being an educated consumer isn’t always easy. It’s a good idea to bookmark the link to the USDA site for an updated list of current recalls and alerts

Reading Labels

Reading labels takes a few extra moments, but with practice becomes a normal part of the shopping process. I’m noticing more and more people in the grocery store who are taking time to read labels. I consider that a very good thing!

Use the Nutritional Data label to make sure none of the ingredients have been part of a recent food recall. The Nutritional Data label tells you all kinds of essential information about your food. Here’s a great infographic from Fat Girl Rehab Healthy and Fit that shows how to understand a Nutritional Data label.
