“Willpower is trying very hard not to do something you want to do very much.”
– John Ortberg
When people try to lose weight they often pick diets that require them to use a lot of willpower. I’ve tried a great number of such diets and although I may have succeeded in losing a few pounds, the weight never stayed off and it wasn’t long before I was back to square one. When it comes to food anything having to do with willpower is worthless for me. I like to eat way too much. Research shows that fad diets don’t work. And most of those deal with willpower. To get lasting results we need to make a lifestyle change. And sometimes that requires us to take a good look at what is eating us! Eating is a very emotional behavior so it should not surprise us that to deal with our eating we need to look at the psychology of eating.
We all have a relationship with food and if we want to make changes then we need to look at that relationship up close and personal. That’s the only way to really make a lifestyle change which is apt to last. Otherwise, a quick diet to lose weight will act more like a bandaid. It won’t be dealing with the cause of the problem.
What’s Eating You?
A recent Blog Post about this topic on the Kripalu website does a great job of looking at this problem.
Read Changing Your Relationship With Food and see if it helps you identify your psycological triggers. That is the first step on making a successful lifestyle change.
No Expiration Date
Don’t forget, a good nutrition program should not have an expiration date! Your body is here for the long term. So should the food you are choosing to fuel it.
